The Front Row

EA Chose Renegade

It’s the end of Mass Effect and BioWare as we know it. EA has pulled the plug on a studio that has long had its best years behind it — thirty-one years, around 400 jobs cut, and the next Mass Effect cancelled while still in early development. It was only a matter of time but it’s a ruthless cut from a publisher that had the means to support it back to its best. They just choose not to.

EA went private two months ago in a $55 billion buyout led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, a deal that put roughly $18 billion in debt on the company, with plans to save up to $700 million. Whether the new owners had any sort of decision on this, time will tell. But looking back, it really goes some way to proving that the golden age of gaming has probably seen its day when all we are getting is sunsetting of games that are a powerhouse brand and long established.

Power Is Dead. Long Live Value

When you look at the most successful consoles of this generation, the base PS5 stands out — at launch it was incredible value, especially if you went digital, and it’s gone on to shift roughly 86 million units against Xbox’s 34 million. And if you look across the room at Xbox, for most of this generation the most successful console wasn’t the Series X — it was the Series S. As of 2022, roughly three-quarters of Xbox Series owners worldwide had the little S. It’s only recently, towards the end of the generation, that the X has clawed past it in cumulative sales. Either way, the lesson stands: there’s going to have to be a range of diverse price offerings for the next generation.

Modern GTA, Same Old Magic

There aren’t many songs that catch me right away, but this one sure did. It’s from GTA VI and it’s called “Flower in a Hurricane,” feat. Tame Impala, SZA, and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. It’s quite a rarity for a game soundtrack to hit this hard. But let’s be honest — even with how modern this take on GTA is, it’s all still hitting the right notes.

Check it out! I love it.

Judgment Died, Fable Rose, and Somehow I’m Excited for Next Gen

Ever since Judgment’s fate was put in doubt because of unforeseen circumstances around the lead character, it really irked me a lot, because that was a franchise I was getting into. Especially with the fact it was a narrative tale in English. The dispute with Takuya Kimura’s agency never fully went away, and while both games did eventually find their way to PC, we’ve never seen a third. A franchise left dormant rather than dead. I have always loved Sonic, so the chance to find another IP from Sega to get excited about is always something I am going to explore. As you do if you love video games.
